What most applications require

Passport and visa photo rules vary by country, but they share the same core requirements: a recent, front-facing photograph with a neutral expression, taken against a plain light background, with the face filling a specified portion of the frame. The most widely used size is 35 by 45 millimetres, while the United States uses a 2 by 2 inch square. Always check the exact specification for the country you are applying to before you print.

Taking a photo that will be accepted

• Face the camera directly with a neutral expression and both eyes open.
• Use even, natural lighting so there are no harsh shadows on your face or behind you.
• Stand in front of a plain, light-coloured wall.
• Avoid hats, sunglasses and heavy shadows; ordinary glasses are usually fine if there is no glare.
• Have someone take the photo from a couple of metres away rather than at arm's length, which distorts features.

Printing at home

The print sheet option arranges multiple copies on a standard 4 by 6 inch photo page at 300 DPI, which is the size most photo printing shops and home printers handle. Print it on photo paper without any scaling or fit-to-page option enabled, since that would change the physical dimensions, then cut along the edges. If you would rather not print at home, save the sheet and take it to any print shop.
